Tracking the economic impact of Covid-19 with Monitoro

Written on 2020-05-01

Having had a rocky beginning in January, the year 2020 has seemed to only be getting worse as a pandemic the like of which has not been witnessed by the world in decades, has engulfed us all and put a large part of the global population in very vulnerable circumstances.

Despite how discouraging circumstances may seem, it is also true that the coronavirus pandemic has brought out the best in many of us and we are now seeing unprecedented humanitarian and charitable efforts all over the world.

To play our part in combating the Coronavirus, we're thrilled to announce that Monitoro is supporting the Technology Policy Institute (TPI) in Washington D.C. to inform its COVID-19 Economic Impact Dashboard for executives, investment analysts, and attorneys who are looking for economic intelligence to help them make business decisions. TPI's team of Ph.D. economists has a unique perspective on markets and the political outlook of the situation, benefitting decision makers and individuals alike.

Our collaboration with the Technology Policy Institute has allowed us to help their team collect data generated by several organisations such as the U.S. Treasury, U.S. Transportation Security Administration, the Baltic Exchange in London. While this would normally require a vast amount of resources from TPI, with Monitoro, TPI can easily update its COVID-19 Economic Impact Dashboard in real time. Not only has it enabled the TPI to gain access to the latest numbers in a rapidly shifting environment, but has done it in a manner that is considerably more cost effective than other expensive customized services.

Monitoro is currently helping TPI to track three vital indices on this new Dashboard. TSA Flight Data, for example, which shows how the travel numbers are changing everyday and how they compare to the numbers on the same day from 2019. The Dashboard indicates that while the TSA recorded over 2 million travellers at the beginning of March 2020, the number has now dropped to less than 100,000 travellers a day. While deemed necessary by most, this decrease in travellers has had a significant impact on the airline industry as well as the American economy.

As government officials, at the federal as well as state levels, scramble to gather relevant data that will enable them to make tough choices regarding the reopening of the economy, real time economic indicators can be crucial in informing these decisions. The role that Monitoro has played - and continues to play - in making this information available to the relevant stakeholders is invaluable.

Our mission at Monitoro is to democratize everyone's access to data as soon as it becomes available. We hope to continue to empower and enable organizations through fresh and updated data.

About TPI

The Technology Policy Institute (TPI) is a think tank that focuses on the economics of innovation, technological change, and related regulation in the United States and around the world. Their aim is to advance knowledge and inform policymakers by producing independent, rigorous research and by sponsoring educational programs and conferences on major issues affecting information technology and communications policy.

About Monitoro

There is no doubt that data and analytics are already shaking up multiple industries, the effects of which become more pronounced as adoption reaches critical masses. In an attempt to harness this power of data and provide an edge to companies and individuals alike, Omar - the dynamic founder of Monitoro, came up with a brilliant idea to unlock this potential: a SaaS to monitor websites for changes, and extract data every time it happens.

Monitoro enables people to make faster and better decisions by sending data to the services where they need it. Among those, Google Sheets, Airtable, Slack, MS Teams and many others can be integrated in a few clicks to receive live data as it changes. Currently, it is funded by Pioneer which is an online accelerator founded by a former Y Combinator partner.
